 \n\n\n\nScope of the Workshop series\nThe primary aim of this series of Wo
 rkshops is to assess the state-of-the-art and reliability of microbeam ana
 lysis techniques.\nThe Workshops are organised in such a way as to maximis
 e transfer of knowledge among the participants and to provide a comprehens
 ive exhibition of the latest analytical equipment. The programme includes 
 time and opportunities for participants to visit the technical exhibitions
  and interact with the manufacturers.\nPrevious Workshops in this series w
 ere held in Antwerp (1989)\, Dubrovnik (1991)\, Rimini (1993)\, St. Malo (
 1995)\, Torquay (1997)\, Konstanz (1999)\, Tampere (2001)\, Chiclana de la
  Frontera (2003)\, Florence (2005)\, Antwerp (2007)\, Gdansk (2009)\, Ange
 rs (2011)\, Porto (2013)\, Portorož (2015)\, Konstanz (2017)\, Trondheim (
 2019)\, Krakow (2023)\, and Mataró (2025). They included sessions covering
  electron (EPMA\, EBSD\, TEM\, SEM\, Auger\, EELS)\, ion (SIMS\, FIB)\, an
 d nuclear (RBS\, NRA) microbeam methods.\nThe main topics of the Ninenteen
 th Workshop (EMAS 2027) are: Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA)\; Electro
 n backscatter diffraction (EBSD)\; Correlative techniques\; EDD\, EDS and 
 EELS in TEM\; and Software for microbeam analysis.  Time will also be devo
 ted to problem orientated applications in material science\, geological sc
 ience\, environmental studies\, astrophysics\, microelectronics\, forensic
 s\, cultural heritage and archaeology\, nanomaterials\, surfaces and inter
 faces\, catalysts\, sensors\, …\ntop\nRound-table discussions\nOur round-t
 able discussions are panel discussions taking place at the end of each sci
 entific session on a main topic.  They are moderated by a leading expert\,
  assisted by the invited speakers of the corresponding session.\nThe idea 
 is to stimulate the exchange of information and experience among the parti
 cipants on a number of important problems in microbeam techniques.  Such a
 ctivities need careful preparation\, both with regard to structure and sub
 jects.  Therefore\, we would kindly request you to complete the discussion
  questionnaire on the on-line registration page.  If you have specific que
 stions\, these can also be mentioned in 'Other suggestions' on the questio
 nnaire.\nBrief presentations or contributions to the round-table discussio
 ns are encouraged (please contact the round-table chairperson at the begin
 ning of the Workshop).\ntop\nPosters\nPoster contributions are welcome on 
 subjects within the scope of the workshop (see Scope).  The abstracts will
  be refereed by the International Scientific Committee and will be publish
 ed\, together with the text of the invited lectures\, in the Book of Tutor
 ials and Abstracts of the workshop.\nThere will be three Oral Poster Sessi
 ons in which selected authors will be given 5 minutes to present the highl
 ights of their poster using two or three powerpoint slides.  Those authors
  selected will be notified some weeks prior to the workshop.\nAuthors have
  the opportunity to discuss their posters during the three poster sessions
 .  Posters will be on display during the whole Workshop.  Size of the disp
 lay area: 1.80 m high by 1.20 m wide.\nTwo awards will be given: a) an EMA
 S Award for the best poster by an Early Career Scientist encompassing a ce
 rtificate and an invitation from AMAS - Australian Microbeam Analysis Soci
 ety to present his/her work at a microbeam event in 2028 in Australia (the
  invitation will include a free conference registration and financial supp
 ort from AMAS and EMAS for travel and living expenses)\, and b) an EMAS Wo
 rkshop Poster Award encompassing a certificate and a cash prize of € 500.
 \ntop\nEarly Career Scientists' session\nOne session is dedicated to givin
 g Early Career Scientists (ECS) the opportunity to present their work in a
  15-minute oral presentation (including 3 minutes for discussion) (Eligibi
 lity criteria for ECS status can be found on the ‘EMAS Bursaries and Grant
 s’ subpage of the EMAS website). There will be up to six such presentation
 s selected from the submitted abstracts.\nThe best contribution and presen
 tation will be awarded the EMAS Early Career Scientist Award\, encompassin
 g a certificate and an invitation from the Microanalysis Society of Americ
 a (MAS) to present his/her work at the Microscopy and Microanalysis 2028 M
 eeting to be held in Seattle\, Washington (the invitation will include a f
 ree conference registration and financial support from MAS and EMAS for tr
 avel and living expenses).\nEarly Career Scientists wishing to be consider
 ed for this session should have submitted an abstract\, and have to send a
  written application to the Workshop Secretariat\, reaching it before 15 N
 ovember 2026\, and should be member of EMAS. Applicants will be notified o
 f the allocation of an Early Career Scientists’ session slot by 15 January
  2027. Applicants for an EMAS Bursary are also eligible to apply.\ntop\nAb
 stracts\nAbstracts to be presented during the workshop should fit two A4 p

 6th\, 2027)A ½-day short course introducing the physical principles and pr
 actical methods of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).  The course is
  aimed at students\, technicians\, engineers and researchers with no or li
 mited experience of EBSD\, although some familiarity with basic SEM techni
 ques would be beneficial.  Topics will include an overview of EBSD\, basic
 s of sample preparation\, data analysis\, EBSD of non-conductive materials
 \, recent software advancements\, and the use of dynamical simulations.  T
 he course will be interactive\, with ongoing Q&A throughout\, allowing par
 ticipants to ask questions as they arise.\nShort course: Electron probe mi
 croanalysis (morning Sunday June 6th\, 2027)This ½-day short course aims t
 o explore some of the challenges and opportunities of working at the limit
 s of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA).  We will explore light element a
 nd low voltage analysis\; analysis of trace elements\; high-resolution ana
 lysis and the effects of secondary fluorescence\; the use of a range of co
 ating materials for problematic non-conducting samples.  Participants shou
 ld be moderately equipped with a working knowledge of EPMA\, both the theo
 ry and some technical experience of the instrument\, to wholly benefit fro
 m this course.\nShort course: XMapTools (morning Sunday June 6th\, 2027)Th
 is ½-day short course will introduce XMapTools\, a software solution for p
 rocessing\, analysing and interpreting chemical maps obtained using EPMA\,
  SEM/EDS or LA-ICP-MS techniques.  Participants will be guided through the
  entire process for EPMA data\, from importing and standardising raw data\
 , to generating quantitative chemical maps and performing supervised class
 ification\, to extracting useful petrological metrics such as modal abunda
 nces\, local bulk compositions\, and quantification of compositional zonin
 g in minerals.  The course will combine short lectures\, live demonstratio
 ns and practical exercises using real datasets.  It is intended for early-
  to mid-career researchers\, graduate students and laboratory technicians 
 who wish to incorporate chemical mapping into their work.\nShort course: M
 onte Carlo simulation (afternoon Sunday June 6th\, 2027)In electron micros
 copy and its analytical methods\, the electron- and photon matter interact
 ions play a dominant role.  The electrons and the atoms of a sample are th
 e reactants\, and the backscattered\, transmitted\, secondary electrons\, 
 the characteristic\, and Bremsstrahlung X-rays\, the products.  As only th
 e products of these interactions can be measured\, Monte Carlo simulations
  have been developed over the years to help microscopists understand\, vis
 ualise\, predict and get results obtained from their measurements.This ½-d
 ay short course aims to be as practical as possible\, providing tutorials 
 how modern and freely available Monte Carlo programmes can be used to addr
 ess common microanalysis problems and situations\, including the reconstru
 ction of simple geometries.  Taking advantage of their respective possibil
 ities\, different programmes will be demonstrated in the course\, includin
 g NeXL\, PENELOPE\, Monaco\, MC X-Ray and PyMonteCarlo.  Additionally\, al
 ternative deterministic approximations of the Boltzmann transport equation
  together with code examples will be presented. Attendees are encouraged t
 o bring a laptop.\nWorking group meetings\nEach of these is limited to 25 
 participants.  They are open to non-workshop participants.  Cost for the ‘
 Facility management’ working group meeting is € 75\, and € 100 for the ‘EP
 MA optimisation in irradiated and nuclear material analysis’ working group
  meeting.\nWorking group: EPMA optimisation in irradiated and nuclear mate
 rial analysis (afternoon Saturday June 5th\, 2027)Numerous difficulties ar
 e encountered when performing EPMA analysis on irradiated and radioactive 
 nuclear materials.  These include\, but are not limited to: lack of reliab
 le standards\, difficulty handling samples\, complex overlaps (e.g.\, Kr-K
 α)\, lack of reliable φ(ρZ) corrections\, etc.This working group will focu
 s on EPMA analysis of nuclear and radioactive materials. The goal is to id
 entify high priority issues that can be addressed collaboratively by sessi
 on members following the meeting.\nWorking group: Reference materials\, fa
 cility management\, and EPMA maintenance (afternoon Sunday June 6th\, 2027
 )This working group will be the first opportunity to discuss our needs and
  efforts towards better reference materials and standards necessary for ac
 curate quantitative microanalysis.  This first meeting of the yet to be cr
 eated European Group on Microanalytical Standards will be combined with ou
 r usual working group on facility management of a microanalytical facility
 \, such as a scanning or analytical transmitted electron microscope or an 
 electron microprobe laboratory (among others).One of the primordial tasks 
 of the lab manager is to ensure optimum working conditions for the instrum
 ent(s)\, and to ensure that the analysts – students or researchers – get t
 he data they need with the excellent precision and accuracy they deserve. 
  These instruments are expensive and need care to ensure high quality resu
 lts\, and the manager should be able to easily identify the problem and so
 metimes even fix it\, and to run periodically performance and quality test
 s.  Beside interventions from dr Dirk Berger (leader of the IGEME: German 
 interest group of electron microscopic facilities) and dr Julien Allaz (fo
 rmer leader of FIGMAS: Focussed interest group on microanalytical standard
 s) we hope to have active discussions on the following matters (listed as 
 an example):• Standards and reference materials\, European FIGMAS\,• Quali
 ty controls and testing of instrument performance\,• Teaching & training f
 or lab users and students\,• Lab organisation\,• Comparison of different r
 esearch environment\,• Networking laboratories within and between houses\,
 • Model for seed funding for young scientists\,• Public relation\, such as
  “core facility days”\,• etc.As these subjects can be quite broad\, partic

 rigny\, 1015 Chavannes-près-Renens\, Lausanne\nLausanne is the fourth larg
 est city of Switzerland and the capital of the French speaking canton of V
 aud.  It is a vibrant city\, with a long Celtic\, Roman\, and Mediaeval hi
 story\, on the shores of Lake Geneva (or simply “The Léman”).  It is renow
 ned as a global hub for education\, sports\, and culture\, and is also cal
 led the Olympic Capital as it hosts the International Olympic Committee an
 d its Museum\, which you will have a chance to visit during our Workshop b
 anquet.  Lausanne is a rather steep city\, starting at 375 m at the Léman 
 level in Ouchy\, 500-550 m in the centre\, and reaching above 800 m on the
  top part.\nIt has fortunately an excellent bus and metro system\, featuri
 ng notably the unique M2 metro\, which is the steepest fully automated rub
 ber-tired subway in the world with a slope of 12 %.  Ouchy is the harbour 
 area\, with regular public boat trips to Montreux\, Geneva\, France and to
 uristic tours on the lake.  The city centre is dominated by the 12th centu
 ry cathedral and its castle hosting our canton politics\, and its famous “
 Escalier du Marché” staircase and its old town\, with notably the Flon val
 ley and Riponne Place that include several shops\, bars\, restaurants\, an
 d night clubs.  On the hill above Lausanne is a little green paradise\, th
 e forest of Sauvablin with a watch tower offering a view of Lausanne area\
 , the French Alps\, and the lake.  The eastern part of Lausanne towards Mo
 ntreux is the UNESCO vineyard of Lavaux\, and further is the famous Castle
  of Chillon.  More vineyard is also present in the “La Côte” area\, toward
 s Geneva.  The Alps are also never far away\, and with a couple trains\, y
 ou can reach in 1h20 the summit of “Rocher de Naye” above Montreux\, or yo
 u can take the train to Gstaad and Interlaken in the core of the Bernese O
 berland (~4 hours)\, or towards Brig\, Zermatt and the Matterhorn (~3 hour
 s).\nThe Dorigny university campus is hosting UNIL and EPFL and sits on th
 e western-side of Lausanne.  It is easily accessible via the M1 metro line
  that links Renens and Lausanne centre.  The University was founded in 153
 7 as a school of theology.  In the 1970s\, it progressively moved from the
  centre of Lausanne around the cathedral and the castle\, notably at the P
 alais of Rumine\, to its current location in Dorigny.  By the end of the 2
 0th century\, a greater co-operation has been emplaced between French spea

 t (GVA) is situated 57 km west of Lausanne.  Geneva airport is connected t
 o Renens (VD\; ~ 45 min) and to Lausanne main station (~ 1 h) by intercity
  trains running twice every hour (IC 1\, IR 90\, or IR 95).The Basel-Mulho
 use-Freiburg EuroAirport (BSL\, MLH\, EAP) is situated 200 km north-east o
 f Lausanne.  This airport is in France and the bus #50 brings you to Basel
  (Switzerland)\, where you can take a train every hour to reach Renens or 
 Lausanne in ~ 3 h (IC 51).The Zürich airport (ZRH) is situated 230 km nort
 h-east of Lausanne.  Zürich airport is connected to Lausanne by trains run
 ning every ½ hour to Lausanne in 2½ hours\, either via Bern (IC 1) or via 
 the foot of the Jura mountains (IC 5 or IC 55).\nb) By train: Lausanne is 
 accessible by several fast trains notably from France (e.g.\, Paris ~ 4 h)
