 im of this series of Workshops is to assess the state-of-the-art and relia
 bility of microbeam analysis techniques.\nThe Workshops are organised in s
 uch a way as to maximise transfer of knowledge among the participants and 
 to provide a comprehensive exhibition of the latest analytical equipment. 
 The programme includes time and opportunities for participants to visit th
 e technical exhibitions and interact with the manufacturers.\nPrevious Wor
 kshops in this series were held in Antwerp (1989)\, Dubrovnik (1991)\, Rim
 ini (1993)\, St. Malo (1995)\, Torquay (1997)\, Konstanz (1999)\, Tampere 
 (2001)\, Chiclana de la Frontera (2003)\, Florence (2005)\, Antwerp (2007)
 \, Gdansk (2009)\, Angers (2011)\, Porto (2013)\, Portorož (2015)\, Konsta
 nz (2017)\, Trondheim (2019)\, Krakow (2023)\, and Mataró (2025). They inc
 luded sessions covering electron (EPMA\, EBSD\, TEM\, SEM\, Auger\, EELS)\
 , ion (SIMS\, FIB)\, and nuclear (RBS\, NRA) microbeam methods.\nThe main 
 topics of the Ninenteenth Workshop (EMAS 2027) are: Electron probe microan
 alysis (EPMA)\; Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)\; Correlative tech
 niques\; EDD\, EDS and EELS in TEM\; and Software for microbeam analysis. 
  Time will also be devoted to problem orientated applications in material 
 science\, geological science\, environmental studies\, astrophysics\, micr
 oelectronics\, forensics\, cultural heritage and archaeology\, nanomateria
 ls\, surfaces and interfaces\, catalysts\, sensors\, …\ntop\nRound-table d
 iscussions\nOur round-table discussions are panel discussions taking place
  at the end of each scientific session on a main topic.  They are moderate
 d by a leading expert\, assisted by the invited speakers of the correspond
 ing session.\nThe idea is to stimulate the exchange of information and exp
 erience among the participants on a number of important problems in microb
 eam techniques.  Such activities need careful preparation\, both with rega
 rd to structure and subjects.  Therefore\, we would kindly request you to 
 complete the discussion questionnaire on the on-line registration page.  I
 f you have specific questions\, these can also be mentioned in 'Other sugg
 estions' on the questionnaire.\nBrief presentations or contributions to th
 e round-table discussions are encouraged (please contact the round-table c
 hairperson at the beginning of the Workshop).\ntop\nPosters\nPoster contri
 butions are welcome on subjects within the scope of the workshop (see Scop
 e).  The abstracts will be refereed by the International Scientific Commit
 tee and will be published\, together with the text of the invited lectures
 \, in the Book of Tutorials and Abstracts of the workshop.\nThere will be 
 three Oral Poster Sessions in which selected authors will be given 5 minut
 es to present the highlights of their poster using two or three powerpoint
  slides.  Those authors selected will be notified some weeks prior to the 
 workshop.\nAuthors have the opportunity to discuss their posters during th
 e three poster sessions.  Posters will be on display during the whole Work
 shop.  Size of the display area: 1.80 m high by 1.20 m wide.\nTwo awards w
 ill be given: a) an EMAS Award for the best poster by an Early Career Scie
 ntist encompassing a certificate and an invitation from AMAS - Australian 
 Microbeam Analysis Society to present his/her work at a microbeam event in
  2028 in Australia (the invitation will include a free conference registra
 tion and financial support from AMAS and EMAS for travel and living expens
 es)\, and b) an EMAS Workshop Poster Award encompassing a certificate and 
 a cash prize of € 500.\ntop\nEarly Career Scientists' session\nOne session
  is dedicated to giving Early Career Scientists (ECS) the opportunity to p
 resent their work in a 15-minute oral presentation (including 3 minutes fo
 r discussion) (Eligibility criteria for ECS status can be found on the ‘EM
 AS Bursaries and Grants’ subpage of the EMAS website). There will be up to
  six such presentations selected from the submitted abstracts.\nThe best c
 ontribution and presentation will be awarded the EMAS Early Career Scienti
 st Award\, encompassing a certificate and an invitation from the Microanal
 ysis Society of America (MAS) to present his/her work at the Microscopy an
 d Microanalysis 2028 Meeting to be held in Seattle\, Washington (the invit
 ation will include a free conference registration and financial support fr
 om MAS and EMAS for travel and living expenses).\nEarly Career Scientists 
 wishing to be considered for this session should have submitted an abstrac
 t\, and have to send a written application to the Workshop Secretariat\, r
 eaching it before 15 November 2026\, and should be member of EMAS. Applica
 nts will be notified of the allocation of an Early Career Scientists’ sess

 e: Introduction to EBSD  (morning Sunday June 6th\, 2027)A ½-day short cou
 rse introducing the physical principles and practical methods of electron 
 backscatter diffraction (EBSD).  The course is aimed at students\, technic
 ians\, engineers and researchers with no or limited experience of EBSD\, a
 lthough some familiarity with basic SEM techniques would be beneficial.  T
 opics will include an overview of EBSD\, basics of sample preparation\, da
 ta analysis\, EBSD of non-conductive materials\, recent software advanceme
 nts\, and the use of dynamical simulations.  The course will be interactiv
 e\, with ongoing Q&A throughout\, allowing participants to ask questions a
 s they arise.\nShort course: Electron probe microanalysis  (morning Sunday
  June 6th\, 2027)This ½-day short course aims to explore some of the chall
 enges and opportunities of working at the limits of electron probe microan
 alysis (EPMA).  We will explore light element and low voltage analysis\; a
 nalysis of trace elements\; high-resolution analysis and the effects of se
 condary fluorescence\; the use of a range of coating materials for problem
 atic non-conducting samples.  Participants should be moderately equipped w
 ith a working knowledge of EPMA\, both the theory and some technical exper
 ience of the instrument\, to wholly benefit from this course.\nShort cours
 e: XMapTools  (morning Sunday June 6th\, 2027)This ½-day short course will
  introduce XMapTools\, a software solution for processing\, analysing and 
 interpreting chemical maps obtained using EPMA\, SEM/EDS or LA-ICP-MS tech
 niques.  Participants will be guided through the entire process for EPMA d
 ata\, from importing and standardising raw data\, to generating quantitati
 ve chemical maps and performing supervised classification\, to extracting 
 useful petrological metrics such as modal abundances\, local bulk composit
 ions\, and quantification of compositional zoning in minerals.  The course
  will combine short lectures\, live demonstrations and practical exercises
  using real datasets.  It is intended for early- to mid-career researchers
 \, graduate students and laboratory technicians who wish to incorporate ch
 emical mapping into their work.\nShort course: Modelling in EPMA using MC 
 simulation and introduction to the Boltzmann transport equation  (afternoo
 n Sunday June 6th\, 2027)In electron microscopy and its analytical methods
 \, the electron- and photon-matter interactions play a dominant role.  The
  electrons and atoms of a sample are the reactants\, and the backscattered
 \, transmitted\, secondary electrons\, characteristic X-rays\, and Bremsst
 rahlung X-rays are the products.  As only the products of these interactio
 ns can be measured\, Monte Carlo simulations have been developed over the 
 years to help microscopists understand\, visualize\, predict and interpret
  results obtained from their measurements.This ½-day short course aims to 
 be as practical as possible\, providing tutorials on how modern and freely
  available Monte Carlo programmes can be used to address common microanaly
 sis problems and situations\, including the reconstruction of simple geome
 tries.  Taking advantage of their respective capabilities\, the course wil
 l demonstrate different programmes\, including NEXL\, PENELOPE\, MONACO\, 
 MC X-RAY (with a new interface and a parallelised version 1\,000 times fas
 ter than the previous version)\, and PYMONTECARLO. In addition\, alternati
 ve deterministic approximations of the Boltzmann transport equation will b
 e presented\, along with simple code examples.  Attendees are encouraged t
 o bring a laptop.\nWorking group meetings\nEach of these is limited to 25 
 participants.  They are open to non-workshop participants.  Cost for the ‘
 Facility management’ working group meeting is € 75\, and € 100 for the ‘EP
 MA optimisation in irradiated and nuclear material analysis’ working group
  meeting.\nWorking group: EPMA optimisation in irradiated and nuclear mate
 rial analysis  (afternoon Saturday June 5th\, 2027)Numerous difficulties a
 re encountered when performing EPMA analysis on irradiated and radioactive
  nuclear materials.  These include\, but are not limited to: lack of relia
 ble standards\, difficulty handling samples\, complex overlaps (e.g.\, Kr-
 Kα)\, lack of reliable φ(ρZ) corrections\, etc.This working group will foc
 us on EPMA analysis of nuclear and radioactive materials. The goal is to i
 dentify high priority issues that can be addressed collaboratively by sess
 ion members following the meeting.\nWorking group: Reference materials\, f
 acility management\, and EPMA maintenance  (afternoon Sunday June 6th\, 20
 27)This working group will be the first opportunity to discuss our needs a
 nd efforts towards better reference materials and standards necessary for 
 accurate quantitative microanalysis.  This first meeting of the yet to be 
 created European Group on Microanalytical Standards will be combined with 
 our usual working group on facility management of a microanalytical facili
 ty\, such as a scanning or analytical transmitted electron microscope or a
 n electron microprobe laboratory (among others).One of the primordial task
 s of the lab manager is to ensure optimum working conditions for the instr
 ument(s)\, and to ensure that the analysts – students or researchers – get
  the data they need with the excellent precision and accuracy they deserve
 .  These instruments are expensive and need care to ensure high quality re
 sults\, and the manager should be able to easily identify the problem and 
 sometimes even fix it\, and to run periodically performance and quality te
 sts.  Beside interventions from dr Dirk Berger (leader of the IGEME: Germa
 n interest group of electron microscopic facilities) and dr Julien Allaz (
 former leader of FIGMAS: Focussed interest group on microanalytical standa
 rds) we hope to have active discussions on the following matters (listed a
 s an example):• Standards and reference materials\, European FIGMAS\,• Qua
 lity controls and testing of instrument performance\,• Teaching & training
  for lab users and students\,• Lab organisation\,• Comparison of different
  research environment\,• Networking laboratories within and between houses

 ausanne is the fourth largest city of Switzerland and the capital of the F
 rench speaking canton of Vaud.  It is a vibrant city\, with a long Celtic\
 , Roman\, and Mediaeval history\, on the shores of Lake Geneva (or simply 
 “The Léman”).  It is renowned as a global hub for education\, sports\, and
  culture\, and is also called the Olympic Capital as it hosts the Internat
 ional Olympic Committee and its Museum\, which you will have a chance to v
 isit during our Workshop banquet.  Lausanne is a rather steep city\, start
 ing at 375 m at the Léman level in Ouchy\, 500-550 m in the centre\, and r
 eaching above 800 m on the top part.\nIt has fortunately an excellent bus 
 and metro system\, featuring notably the unique M2 metro\, which is the st
 eepest fully automated rubber-tired subway in the world with a slope of 12
  %.  Ouchy is the harbour area\, with regular public boat trips to Montreu
 x\, Geneva\, France and touristic tours on the lake.  The city centre is d
 ominated by the 12th century cathedral and its castle hosting our canton p
 olitics\, and its famous “Escalier du Marché” staircase and its old town\,
  with notably the Flon valley and Riponne Place that include several shops
 \, bars\, restaurants\, and night clubs.  On the hill above Lausanne is a 
 little green paradise\, the forest of Sauvablin with a watch tower offerin

 art of Lausanne towards Montreux is the UNESCO vineyard of Lavaux\, and fu
 rther is the famous Castle of Chillon.  More vineyard is also present in t
 he “La Côte” area\, towards Geneva.  The Alps are also never far away\, an
 d with a couple trains\, you can reach in 1h20 the summit of “Rocher de Na
 ye” above Montreux\, or you can take the train to Gstaad and Interlaken in
  the core of the Bernese Oberland (~4 hours)\, or towards Brig\, Zermatt a
 nd the Matterhorn (~3 hours).\nThe Dorigny university campus is hosting UN
 IL and EPFL and sits on the western-side of Lausanne.  It is easily access
 ible via the M1 metro line that links Renens and Lausanne centre.  The Uni
 versity was founded in 1537 as a school of theology.  In the 1970s\, it pr
 ogressively moved from the centre of Lausanne around the cathedral and the

 igny.  By the end of the 20th century\, a greater co-operation has been em
 placed between French speaking universities of Geneva\, Neuchâtel\, and La
 usanne.  In 2003\, the new faculties of Biology and Medicine and of Geosci
 ences and Environment were created to complete the existing faculties of T
 heology & Religious Studies\, Law\, Criminal Justice & Public Administrati
 on\, Arts and Humanities\, Social and Political Sciences\, and Business & 
 Economics.  The site features state-of-the-art facilities like the Anthrop
 ole and Géopolis buildings\, and is surrounded by a forest\, the Sorge and

  or IR 95).The Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg EuroAirport (BSL\, MLH\, EAP) is si
 tuated 200 km north-east of Lausanne.  This airport is in France and the b

 y hour to reach Renens or Lausanne in ~ 3 h (IC 51).The Zürich airport (ZR
 H) is situated 230 km north-east of Lausanne.  Zürich airport is connected
  to Lausanne by trains running every ½ hour to Lausanne in 2½ hours\, eith
 er via Bern (IC 1) or via the foot of the Jura mountains (IC 5 or IC 55).
 \nb) By train: Lausanne is accessible by several fast trains notably from 
 France (e.g.\, Paris ~ 4 h)\, Italy (e.g.\, Milano ~ 5 to 6 h)\, and Germa

 al buses reaching Lausanne\, yet train remains the preferred way of locomo
 tion in Switzerland\, completed with local buses\, trams\, or tramways in
